Who would like to give an unusual definition of theatre is welcome.
So many definitions have been given and the need of concreteness always leads us to the classics. In Greek the word Thèatron derives from the verb theàomai "to look" and it was initially used to indicate the audience, then the location from which the audience watched the show, and finally the building in which, as also at present, the theatrical act is performed. It is important to note how the evolution of these three meanings indicate the problems and evolutions typical of the theatre. The theatre lives of its audience (this is maybe why the audience was initially called thèatron?), changes occur according to the audience culture, mentality, assent or dissent. Let's for example think about the Happening movement of the seventies and eighties, that revolutionized the classical schemes, using a technique that aimed at involving the audience, letting this latter be part of the theatrical act. A continuous research is essential to the life of the theatre, this means using old rules, breaking them, creating new ones, also letting the spectator choose the one he prefers. The real answer to how to judge a theatrical act is the love or contempt that the audience and the critics show after the show. Tonino Conte, artistic director of the Teatro della Tosse, expresses in "Words in Theatre", the regret of the times in which the audience used to rebel to the show throwing tomatoes or anything else, to show an authentic participation that stimulated the growth of the theatre; today the silences or even worse the obliging clappings not only do not help the development of theatre, but lead to its death.
Teatropen is based on research. Gives the opportunity to realize an idea; promotes collaborations, meetings, and discussions: "what really counts is the revolutionary-becoming and not the future or past of the revolution. the becoming, the movement, the speed are in the middle”. Things grow in the middle.
Villa Celimontana Jazz, in the 2006 edition, has given life to a space reserved to the theatrical scene aiming at enriching the cultural offer. The project was born from the idea of transforming Villa Celimontana in a "cultural village" with a careful research of the several artistic fields that could have a common background with jazz. The experiment proposed a different theatrical act at the end of each concert during all the month of July. The success of last year has convinced us to repeat it in the future 2007 edition, always trying to do our best in order to propose original and high quality acts. |
